I promise, I'll explain it all when we get back. I'll draw you pictures, I'll use puppets... but for right now, you just have to just listen to me.

Alex Edwards life isn’t really much of anything to write home about. Sure, there’s the whole part where a kid who lost his parents tragically young was somehow fortunate enough to be adopted by his insanely wealthy aunt and uncle, and the whole genius prodigal child thing, but really, it’s not all that interesting. Or at least, it wasn’t until he somehow managed to make it into his mid teens without accidentally killing himself, anyway.

… Actually, you know what? Maybe we should start at the beginning after all, seeing as it’s really probably only boring to him.

The thing is that Alex wasn’t really born into the lap of luxury, not quite, anyway. His father, Anthony, was just a soldier, who dedicated his life to serving his country and trying to make the world a better place, and his mother, Maria, was an up and coming investigative journalist, which, wasn’t all that easy a field to break into when you were a woman in the early 70s and even less so when your husband was being moved around every year or two for work. The young couple lived within their means, and despite their struggles, they were overjoyed when they found out they were expecting a child.

Just five before the birth of their son, Anthony retired honorably from the US Army, after serving nearly twelve years and four tours in Vietnam. Finally, they had a chance to settle down, and just in time to start their family. As it goes, the couple bought a small house, just outside of Chicago. They did all the right things—bought the furniture and painted the nursery. It wasn’t much, but it was theirs. Maria scored a job working for a small local newspaper while Anthony took to business and started a small private security firm with the help of a former Army buddy and his brother, Isaac.

For the first few years after Alex was born, everything was good. It was ideal, even. Soon, Maria was a staff reporter for the Chicago Sun Times, while Anthony’s company quickly became one of the premier private security firms in the country. Funny thing is, life has a way of throwing a wrench in the gears at the worst times.

It was an ordinary March night, when Anthony and Maria were on their way home from a fundraiser at the Redondo Beach Historic Library. The couple was happy, laughing after a fantastic night, but they were glad to be going home to their young son. No one could have seen it coming, when the other man sped through the light and hit their car from the passenger side, going twice the speed limit. The car rolled twice before finally coming to a stop. Both Anthony and Maria were pronounced dead at the scene.

It was a situation that Alex had no control over and couldn’t have changed if he wanted to, but it set his life on a path that he never could have imagined. Per his parents will, Alex was put under the permanent guardianship of his uncle Isaac and his wife, Morgan, and enrolled in the best private school Chicago had to offer.

While they may not have been mom and dad, Isaac and Morgan did everything in their power to make Alex’s life as comfortable as possible, especially in the wake of something as emotionally devastating as the loss of his parents. They encouraged extracurriculars, supported every one of his crazy ideas, and they didn’t get angry when he would take apart toys to see how they worked instead of actually playing with them. The thing was that he wasn’t exact the best when it came to people. He had a cocky attitude, he knew he was smart, probably too smart for his own good, he talked back to teachers and probably broke the heart of half the girls at the Buckley School.

By the time he was twelve, Isaac and Morgan were at their wits end. Convinced they’d pampered him too much and likely created a goddamn monster, they sent him off to an all boys boarding school in England for the remainder of his schooling. Ever the child prodigy, however, and frankly, bored with people and the lack of women, Alex flew through school. At only fifteen years old, he had finished his high school education… while still managing to sneak out and find himself a few lady friends along the way.

College wasn’t really anything to write home about. Some people might wonder if it was awkward being so young and on your own, but for Alex, it was the first time in a long time that he felt like he might actually be challenged. (Though, if you asked him, he’d still attest to being the smartest person in the room at any given time.) Like any young genius, he finished his first bachelor’s degree in only two years. Only seventeen and with no real direction in his life, though, meant that finding a job was pretty much the least of his priorities. He wasn’t ready to work or take on the responsibility go the real world. So instead of going out and getting a job, he opted to pursue a second degree, then a Masters, and a second Masters, with a few breaks in between to blow his family’s money on extravagant trips and shit he probably didn’t actually need.

Suffice to say, the years went by in a blur of girls and books and gadgets.

It wasn’t until he was working on his second masters that things really started to change. When he finally decided that maybe it was high time to get his shit together and actually be a goddamn adult… It helped that he was also twenty-three and had basically been going non stop for the past ten years. Burning out before he was thirty was not on the top of his priorities. So he begrudgingly got a job working in R&D at a local robotics lab and did his best to settle down and be a fucking adult for once in his life… if only to get his family off his back.

For the next four years, Alex stayed with the company, working on his own projects on the side and somehow finding a way to balance everything he ever wanted. But he was bored and he’d always had an issue with people telling him what to do, so it was growing increasingly difficult to hold his tongue when it came to bosses breathing down his neck about deadlines. So when his best friend approached him, talking about starting a tech company, Alex jumped at the chance to be part of the experience.

Nearly sixteen years later, Alex is CTO of Seirbigh Enterprises, and he couldn’t be happier… but he still has no intention of settling down any time soon.

Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark was born in Long Island, New York, to Howard Anthony Stark and Maria Collins Carbonell Stark. In his youth, Tony Stark was a precociously intelligent young boy. When Tony was 7 he was sent to a boarding school, and during this experience he found people difficult to relate to. This was when he became fascinated by machines. By the age of 15 Tony had enrolled in MIT (The Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated at the top of his class at age 19 with double masters in physics and engineering.

At the age of 21, his parents were tragically killed in a car accident. Afterwards, Tony inherited Stark Industries, an unparalleled mega-conglomerate that mostly manufactured weapons for the United States military. One of his first projects as the new CEO was to purchase the manufacturer who designed his parents' car and have the faulty brake system, which was seemingly the cause of their deaths, redesigned in order to prevent any further incidents, thus saving lives. Unknown to Stark, the true architect of his parents' deaths was a business move by Republic Oil (later renamed Roxxon Oil). Lacking in business skills, Tony promoted secretary Pepper Potts to be his executive assistant and left the majority of his workload on her so that he could avoid what he saw as a burden.

During the war in Afghanistan, Stark was at one of his munitions plants testing new technology for the military when he was injured by his own land mine that lodged shrapnel near his heart. Tony was then captured by a local warlord named Wong-Chu (a lackey of the Mandarin) and forced under threat of death to create a doomsday weapon for him with another captive, the famed Nobel award-winning physicist, Yin Sen. The shrapnel was going to enter his heart and kill him, but he and the physicist created an arc reactor which kept the sharpnel away from his heart. In response, Tony built a suit of armor to help himself escape captivity. In the suit, Stark took on the warlord and his men and avenged Yin Sen's death, thus Iron Man was born. (more)

comic parallels
middle name is anthony, last name is edwards; tony's middle name is edward.

both lost their parents at a relatively young age.

both were child prodigies and attended mit at a very young age (tony was 15, alex was 16 when he started.)

both are inventors and generally prefer machines to real people.

like tony, alex is a notorious lady's man and probably too cocky for his own good.

lots of other little bullshit that's been worked in.
